Métis Governments and Organizations

Councils, nations, settlements, federations and other bodies representing and serving individuals of mixed First Nations and European ancestry who identify with the cultural heritage of the Métis. The Métis Nation is represented through democratically-elected, province-wide governance structures from Ontario westward. Communities identifying as Métis exist throughout Canada, although there are particular rights and legal authority reserved for those with a heritage that can be traced back to the historic settlements of central Canada. Métis can now officially register in much the same way as individual members of First Nations, although who may possess Métis Aboriginal rights has remained for the most part undefined. Some Métis organizations may also serve those unregistered or unsuccessful at registering as members of First Nations.
