Métis Community

Individuals of mixed European and Indigenous ancestry. The use of the term is complex and contentious; the Métis Nation in particular is defined as originating largely in western Canada, radiating outwards from the Red River Settlement and emerging as a political force in the 19th century. The Métis are now recognized as one of the three Indigenous peoples of Canada, although who may claim Métis heritage is not yet defined in legislation.
